The benefits of plants and oils have been known for a very long time. For example, in ancient Egypt, about 6 thousand years ago, they already knew about such aromatic oils as incense and myrrh, and used them for sacrifices to the gods. If incense was used as an offering to the god of the Sun – Ra, then the myrrh was given to the moon god. Even then, the Egyptians knew that some aromatic oils could kill germs. They used these properties of aromatic oils to store mummies. The Greeks inherited the knowledge of essential oils from the Egyptians and began to use them in medicine and cosmetics.
There is a lot of historical evidence that in ancient times, essential oils were in high gear. One of the ancient manuscripts tells that around the tenth century, noble Arabs used aromatic oils for treatment and were engaged in their manufacture and sale.
The popularization of aromatherapy led to the fact that during the Crusades, European universities introduced the theory of essential oils, their properties and applications into the curriculum. However, there was little knowledge and students were only given what the teachers knew, and of course they knew very little.
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the French chemist and perfumer Rene Morris, better known as Professor Gattefosse, while studying essential oils, accidentally discovered the beneficial property of lavender oil. While working in the laboratory, the chemist burned his hand and immediately dipped it in a nearby bottle of lavender aromatic oil, so that the wound healed very quickly. However, this is just a myth that was born as a result of retelling the incident in the laboratory. Historical fact says that the chemist was hospitalized with severe burns, and the traditional treatment did not help, and the scientist began to develop gangrene. Then the scientist himself, ignoring the testimonies of the doctors, took off the bandages and treated the affected tissue with lavender essential oil and, lo and behold, got better, while the doctors predicted a sad outcome for him.
