The effect of massage on the body

Massage has a diverse physiological effect on the body. Subjective sensations during and after massage, with the right choice of massage techniques and the method of their use, dosages are expressed in the appearance of a feeling of pleasant warmth throughout the body, improvement of well-being and increase in general tone. If the massage is not used correctly, general weakness, a feeling of weakness and other negative general and local reactions can occur. Such phenomena are often observed with an overdose of massage movements, even in healthy people, but especially in the elderly, in whom the tissues have increased sensitivity.

The effect of massage on the skin.

By massaging the skin, we act on all its layers, on the skin vessels and muscles, on the sweat and sebaceous glands, and also affect the central nervous system, with which the skin is inextricably linked.

Massage has a diverse physiological effect on the skin:

it is cleaned of torn away horny scales of the epidermis, and with them from foreign particles (dust, etc.) that have fallen into the pores of the skin, and microbes that are usually located on the surface of the skin;
the secretory function of sweat and sebaceous glands improves and their secretions are cleared of secretions;
lymph and blood circulation of the skin is activated, the influence of venous stagnation is eliminated, the blood supply to the skin is strengthened and, therefore, its nutrition is improved, as a result of which pale, sagging, dry skin becomes pink, elastic, velvety, its resistance to mechanical and temperature influences is significantly increased;
musculocutaneous tone increases, which makes the skin smooth, dense and supple;
local and general metabolism improves, since the skin takes part in all metabolic processes in the body.
The effect of massage on the subcutaneous fat layer.

Massage acts on adipose tissue indirectly, through a general effect on metabolism. By increasing metabolic processes in the body, increasing the release of fat from fat depots, massage promotes the “combustion” of fats that are in excess in adipose tissue. It should be noted that massage for weight loss is carried out in long courses (at least 15 sessions) and combined with physical exercises.

The effect of massage on muscles and joints.

Under the influence of massage, the elasticity of muscle fibers, their contractile function increases, muscle atrophy slows down, and hypothyroidism that has already developed is reduced. Massage enhances muscle performance, while accelerating recovery after increased physical activity. Even with short-term massage (within 3-5 minutes), the function of tired muscles is better restored than during rest for 20-30 minutes.

Massage has a significant effect on the joints. Under the influence of massage, the blood supply to the joint and periarticular tissues improves, the ligamentous apparatus of the joint is strengthened, the resorption of the joint effusion, and also topological deposits in the periarticular tissues is accelerated.

The effect of massage on the nervous system.

The nervous system is the first to perceive the effect of massage, because in the skin there is a huge number of nerve endings. By changing the strength, nature, duration of massage, you can reduce or increase nervous excitability, strengthen and revitalize lost reflexes, improve trophic tissue, as well as the activity of internal organs.

Massage has a profound effect on the peripheral nervous system, easing or stopping pain, improving nerve conduction, speeding up the regeneration process when it is damaged, preventing or reducing vasomotor sensitive and trophic disorders. With gentle slow stroking, the excitability of the massed tissues decreases, and this has a calming effect on the nervous system, with vigorous and quick stroking, the irritability of the massed tissues increases. The atmosphere of the massage is very important for influencing the nervous system, warm air, subdued light, pleasant calm music help to enhance the therapeutic effect of the massage.

The effect of massage on the circulatory and lymphatic systems.

Massage causes the expansion of functioning capillaries, the opening of reserve capillaries, which creates a more abundant blood irrigation not only of the massaged area, but also of the reflex and internal organs, resulting in enhanced gas exchange between blood and tissue (oxygen therapy). At rest, 31 capillaries work in 1 mm2 of the cross section of the muscle, and after massage their number increases to 1400! The opening of reserve capillaries under the influence of massage helps to improve the redistribution of blood in the body, which facilitates the work of the heart.
